Joe Powell Accepts Award for Innovations in Recovery for the Online Museum of African American Addictions, Treatment and Recovery
Dallas, TX – Leaders of the addiction recovery advocacy movement from across the nation were honored at the America Honors Recovery Gala on Monday, June 5, 2023, saluting the legacies of dynamic recovery trailblazers who dedicated their lives to removing barriers for individuals and families affected by addiction and honors the future of their legacies.
Joe Powell, President/CEO of the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction, accepted the Innovation in Recovery award on behalf of Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC, who couldn’t attend the event. He read prepared remarks by Mr. Sanders, following up with an appeal for the audience to visit the online museum to learn about the rich history of African Americans who have made (and are making) a difference in promoting recovery from alcohol and other drug problems. Over 100 of the attendees visited the website that evening, Mark Sanders told Mr. Powell.
The Innovations in Recovery Award honors extraordinary innovation and achievements in the recovery community that promote excellence and advances the recovery community and/or recovery support services.
“I am honored to accept this award which recognizes Mark’s legacy as a champion for Recovery and the important work to educate the community about the history of recovery among African Americans,” said Joe Powell. “I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the team at Faces and Voices of Recovery for honoring him with this award.”
